But if you want to know how I came up with the order, read on!

Unlike Star Wars, which has SO many different watch orders, Marvel Movies has two main ones: chronological order and release order. Chronological meaning the order of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Timeline. So Captain America takes place during WWII for example.

I’d seen all the Marvel movies in release order as they came out in theaters. And of course I stayed through the end credits to get hints about the next Marvel movie and then they connected really well together.

Then, for fun, before Avengers End Game came out I started over watching all of the Marvel movies in chronological order. Though the end credit scenes don’t line up the same, it’s fun to see the story play out as it would in a timeline.

Both orders are fun, it’s hard for me to choose a favorite because I love them for different reasons. Chronologically you’ll see the special effects and video quality jump back and forth a bit and the post-credit scenes are out of order. Why not just watch it both ways?

Marvel Movies in Chronological Order

Ultimately when it came to watching the Marvel movies with my kids we decided to go in Chronological order. It seemed easier for them to follow the timeline and they weren’t bothered by the jumps in movie quality. The end credit scenes weren’t too confusing for them either once we got near the end.

Also, a tip: We skipped the Incredible Hulk the first time through because it’s pretty slow and I didn’t want to lose momentum. We went back and watched it later. It’s not needed to understand the series. I’m hoping Disney makes a new version!

Black Widow

Black widow

Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) has finally gotten her standalone film, and it has been the highlight of my year so far! With arguably the best fighting sequences in the MCU to date, Black Widow kicks off right after the events of Captain America: Civil War with our titular character on the run from the government. The movie finally builds on the character Johansson has played for over ten years by introducing the audience to her complex, but fun adopted family and also touches on deeper themes of human trafficking girls for nefarious purposes.

Black Panther

Ant Man and the Wasp

Scott Lang is grappling with the consequences of his choices as both a superhero and a father.

Avengers: Endgame

Thrilling conclusion to the Avengers series. Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Bruce Banner — must figure out a way to bring back their vanquished allies for an epic showdown with Thanos. The evil demigod who decimated the planet and the universe.

Tom Hiddleston resumes his role as Loki, the God of Mischief. In this six episode series that takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The version of Loki who underwent his character development. Eventually sacrificing himself in an attempt to save his brother Thor. Sadly did die at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. The version we get with this highly-anticipated Disney + show is the selfish, power-hungry Loki we all love to hate at the end of The Avengers. Loki escapes Stark Tower with the Tesseract only to immediately be arrested by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) for interfering with the sacred timeline. From there, we see Loki’s attempts to escape back to his world. Meet colorful variants of the mercurial villain turned anti-hero, and root for Mobius to get his jet ski. The original series perfectly sets up Phase 4 of the MCU!

A few weeks after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and her android husband, Vision (Paul Bethany), live the idyllic suburban life. But you may be asking yourself, “Didn’t Thanos kill Vision?”. Yes, he did. But that doesn’t stop Wanda from using her powers to create a new Vision that survives in the life she has created for herself in the aftermath of her grief. The show is a homage to television through the years. A beautiful analysis of loss, sadness, and love, and the birth of the Scarlet Witch.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Falcon and the Winter Soldier

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers gives Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) the shield and breaks his promise to Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) that he will be with him ‘till the end of the line’ (I will never forgive you, Steve). The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (TFATWS) takes place after these events. After regretfully giving up the shield to the government, Sam Wilson teams up with Bucky Barnes and his vibranium arm to investigate what seems to be the unregulated creation of more super soldiers. It’s a much-needed breather from the fantastical magic we expect of the MCU. As it explores the realities of therapy, trauma and race.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Peter Parker’s relaxing European study abroad trip takes an unexpected turn when Nick Fury shows up in his hotel room to recruit him for a mission. The world is in danger as four massive elemental creatures — each representing Earth, air, water and fire — emerge from a hole torn in the universe.

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

When a martial arts master is faced with the Ten Rings organization, he is forced to confront his past. This movie has all the hallmarks of a great Marvel superhero film – action, humor, a great plot, and fantastic actors. It’s definitely one to add to your Marvel collection!

When evil threatens to take over, the Eternals, a race of beings with superhuman powers, must reunite for battle. This film is exciting, adventure-filled, and features a diverse and inclusive character list – great for teaching your kids the importance of such matters.

Eternals Marvel

This Marvel TV series is lightly based on the Hawkeye comics and is perfect for when you want to watch something but are short on time! It’s packed with action, comedy and features great, relatable characters.

  1. Oh wow! 🌟 This post is pure gold for Marvel fans like me! I remember watching the Marvel movies in release order as they hit theaters, but I recently did a re-watch in chronological order, and it was like experiencing the universe anew. It’s fascinating how each perspective (release vs chronological) offers a unique storytelling experience. Your point on skipping the Incredible Hulk is spot on; I felt the same when introducing the series to my younger cousin. The momentum is crucial! I appreciate the checklist too. It’s perfect for those nights when you’re deciding which superhero world to dive into. By the way, I did a piece about how movies, especially franchises like Marvel, impact our perception of heroes and values. It’s such a joy to see fellow fans diving deep into the universe.
