For the first time in more than 10 years all of my sisters and I are together for the holidays. The gathering kind of fell together as last-minute surprise for my mom. I’ll never forget the look on her face when she saw my sister Heather walk through the door.

There is so much laughter and smiles all around, and the little cousins are having a blast playing together.

I’ve been adjusting my Christmas gift list a bit since my niece will be joining us Christmas morning and I want her to have just as magical of a morning as our two. So that means a bit of last-minute shopping.

We went to the mall, which was pretty much a nightmare days before Christmas we started with Build a Bear, which is becoming an annual tradition for my mom to take them.

Then we went down near Santa to let the kids take a spin on the Santa train. I let Big T take a bonus ride because he was having so much fun.

Cute cousins

Afterwards we headed to Sears to pick out a few more gifts for my sister. She is one of those healthy-eating loves-the-gym type gals so I picked out a couple things along those lines. It was painless picking it out but the crowds didn’t make all of the shopping so easy. I’ve been spoiled with their Reserve it and In Vehicle Pickup options.

Christmas is best spent with those we love and I’m blessed to have extra loved ones around this year.

There will be cookie-making, carol-singing and present-wrapping over the next few days. And my 11th anniversary in the middle of it all.

Hoping the holidays are as merry and bright for your and yours and that you are also surrounded by those you love!

Sears knows how tricky last-minute shopping can be so they’re helping me give a gift away to one of my awesome readers. Just leave a comment on this post and you’ll be entered to win a $50 gift card.

Christmas time has been my favorite time of year as long as I can remember. Now seeing the holiday through my children’s eyes brings all the fun I remember as a child back to life. We do Santa in our house.  I’m hoping to take my kids to see him today. I know Miss J will be over the moon excited to chat with him but I’m also just as sure Big T will probably cry the moment he settles on his lap. It’s not personal Santa, Big T is just a big Mama’s boy.

The jolly old fellow is a very loved man with the rest of us though. … And while of course we teach the true meaning of Christmas and celebrate Christ’s birthday, we also enjoy the magic of the season.

I haven’t done a ton of decorating this year, but I hope to score big after Christmas and get a nice stockpile going for next year. I wanted to buy a new tree after Christmas but when we unpacked this one I could only find half of the tree stand, so I bought another. I bought a bunch of extra lights for when I found the other half of the tree stand, so I could make a “white light tree” but turns out I just just re-found the half I already had. *sigh*

At least the lights made for cute photos.

Christmas-Lights_0072-copyIn case you wanted to know the settings of this photo: I used my Canon 5D Mark ii, 100mm 2.8L Lens at f/2.8, ISO 3200, shutter 1/250.

It’s Big T’s first Christmas and Lil’ J is totally into it. All she’s asked for is a play kitchen (with pretend cookies), and a sail boat (what the heck?!). She says she doesn’t want a bike, which I was excited to surprise her with, but I guess we’ll hold off til’ her birthday.

Santa is bringing Big T an awesome walker toy for Christmas.

The gift I’m getting is the chance to spend Christmas with my little family, with all of us off of work for the entire day.

Here’s a peek at the magic and memories we’re making at our house. Promise you’ll love it.

Notice the nativity rearranged? No matter how many times I set it up in order, Lil’ J puts everyone in the manger, and sets Jesus’ little hay bed up where the sheep is suppose to go. Also, Baby Jesus has gone missing after she decided to carry him around for a while. Hopefully he’ll turn up before Christmas.

Do you mix magic and real meaning at your house?

siblings in christmas lightsAs I celebrate the Christmas, I’ll be sharing some of our experiences in a holiday series sponsored by Hallmark. This video features a North Pole Communicator and North Pole Magic Mail, as well as keepsake ornaments I purchased and others I received as gifts.

hallmark life is a special occasion

I haven’t had as much time to sew lately because I’ve been busy with a million other things. So my vacation to Utah gave me a chance to relax and do some things I normally don’t have time to do, but of course I couldn’t bring my machine.

Luckily, my husband’s family is full of seamstresses and conveniently, a family-owned sewing machine store, so coming across one to borrow wasn’t too hard.

Patriotic DressOne of his cousins lent me one of her extras (funny, I know!) so I could whip up a pattern I’d been dying to try.

I bought a bunch of patriotic fabric on sale for $4 at Hancock Fabrics and was saving it in hopes to make an easy dress. Adelaide’s Boutique, which I LOVE and have bought numerous dresses from just started releasing her patterns, and her first one came out just in time.

This is her Strappy Dress Pattern. I love it because there’s no crazy cut outs I needed to make before starting, the pattern was all rectangles so I just went by her measurements. If you’ve been thinking about sewing or are intimidated by the thought, let me tell you, if I can do it, so can you. So give it a shot!

I altered it a little to add a hem band to the bottom since I had a 4th fabric I wanted to use, and I think it came out great!

Oh, and this was my first time (successfully) experimenting with shirring. The pattern has excellent step-by-step directions to get through it. It was nice to try it this was versus stringing elastic through the bodice.

It still took me about 4 hours total (I always underestimate my speed) but it wasn’t hard at all.

Whatcha think?

If you couldn’t tell, we had a blast in Utah. All these were taken on one day. We went to a hot air balloon fest, watched a parade, and watched fireworks that night (which she fell asleep during, silly girl). The next (5) day(s) she kept describing the few fireworks she did see by jumping up and down and saying “Works go BOOM! Up in the skies! Say BOOM! … I cover my ears.” It was so cute, I’ll have to video record it. More on my birthday girl soon. But it’s good to be home!
