I have always held the belief that devices aren't

I have always held the belief that devices aren't evil, and screen time can be used in positive ways. Like a weekly family movie night tradition, or an app that teaches and inspires kids to be generous and give back.

There's nothing I want more than to raise these three to be good, kind, and considerate human beings. I generally think we're doing a pretty good job so far, but I love it when I find a new tool to help. Our family volunteer efforts have looked different through the years, but for the most part, it's been me orchestrating, telling the kids "Alright, we're shopping for other kids today, let's go!" But I'm learning an attitude of living to give is something that my kids have to work on developing themselves. @giveaswegrow is a first-of-its-kind, free educational mobile app for kids 8-11 that teaches kids to tap into their unique talents and interests to help others. It's service-focused minigames are backed by research to help spark empathy and cultivate giving behaviors. Ty is right in the heart of this age group, but Jayda and Lee Lee both love games too so I'm excited to see what it sparks and inspires in our home. Join us! Why they gotta do me like that? 😭

I’ve got so much more to say about this movie but anytime I play this song Lee Lee runs to me and has me pick her up so I can sing and dance while holding her. She LOVES it. And it’s taken me back to how I’ve sung and danced with all of my babies through the years. This sent me on a tear jerking trip down memory lane into the depths of my camera rolls. Some of you might remember some of these moments spanning 13 years with baby Jayda, Ty and now Lee Lee. And though I know At All Costs is a sort of love song for our wishes, I can’t help but love the words for my kids, and my husband (I told him we need to dance to this at a vow renewal). Anyone else get in all the feels when they heard this song or any other the others in Wish?

Jayda just wrapped up back to back performances as

Jayda just wrapped up back to back performances as Chiron in the Lightening Thief Musical and Katrina in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I thought I’d gotten used to seeing her on stage but seeing her perform as two totally different characters really made me see how much she loves this and how talented she is! It’s been an emotional rollercoaster watching her feel like she blew her audition to finding out she was cast as the female lead, then panicking about having a bigger part than she anticipated, but she nailed it. All while having to learn lines in old English and monologues that I could in no way ever imagine remembering in front of crowds of strangers and friends. I don’t know how she does it. Jayda already has her sights set on trying out for a couple different productions next year and I’ll be there to cheer her on. I love this girl and her big dreams. And we love @centraltexastheatreacademy!

Where my older siblings at? 🙋🏾‍♀️ #simonkidspartner Jayda knows what it's like to have someone always over your shoulder. And Lee Lee will do whatever it takes to keep up. Sometimes they get on each other's nerves but they love each other (I mean, can't we all relate?). It's not that unlike the characters in Jessixa Bagley's graphic novel, Duel, where sisters become fierce rivals in the middle school fencing arena. Based on @jessixabagley's own relationship with her sister, the engaging story illustrated by @aaronbagley is fun as a read aloud, or for your young readers. If your kid is looking for a new book, and they're interested in fencing, and/or are fans of Raina Telgemeier, or Shannon Hale, they've gotta check this one out and find out if DUELing sisters finally overcome their rivalry. @simonkids

Long ago I dreamed of the day I would be driving my kids around to their various sports activities. Now that these days are here, it's a lot more hectic than I imagined. But it's also so rewarding. #DSGPartner Jayda is training up for high school cheer tryouts (I know, high school? I'm gonna cry!). Ty is playing on TWO flag football teams, and Lee Lee is still having a blast swinging around a tennis racket, but she's thinking about trying her luck at being a cheerleader too. Sports are so important to our family and that's why we're so proud to be partnering with @dickssportinggoods. Ok, first off, I’m calling Asha a princess but I

Ok, first off, I’m calling Asha a princess but I don’t know if she technically qualifies yet. That’s still TBD. But Going with the fact that she has a talking animal sidekick and is wearing a dress (think Mulan), I’m using that term for this post but it could be interchanged with “heroine” if you prefer.

But here’s what we do know, this would make her

1. She’s Disney’s first African princess.
2. She’s Disney’s first Iberian princess.
3. She’s the first Disney princess voiced by an Afro-Latina actress (Ariana DeBose)
4. Disney’s first biracial heroine.
5. First to wear braids and cornrows!

Of course all of this is a fairytale and a fictional land, but it’s still nice to see new representation. Asha could be from the Moon and I’d still be thrilled, cause it’s awesome to see new diversity in a movie like this.

I could seriously write a whole dissertation on this and how I feel this time with a somewhat racially ambiguous character vs how I felt when Tiana was first announced, how Black people have different definitions of “Black,” and how everyone wants a “princess” and to feel represented. Even if it’s just freckles, or hair color, glasses, body type, family dynamics, ethnic or racial background. And how the princess I relate to most right now is not who you might expect.
