Never have I ever… Been on a hike with complete strangers. A goal on my 2024 vision board was to have more of a social life and a word I wrote down was “Explore.” So when I found a group that hosts regular meetups where women can hike, bike, rock climb, fence, horseback ride, kayak, and so on, I was like “sign me up!!!” I was a little nervous knowing that I wouldn’t know anyone, but it wound up being such a great time. It wasn’t like I went looking to make a new best friend, or with any expectations of networking or trying to impress people. Just breathing in fresh air, laughing, and trying something new with new people. And actually everyone there was a first-timer! I was the only one with young children at home, and honestly, navigating my kids’ schedules and sacrificing free time I actually get with them to go off and do something for *me* feels weird, but also feels good. I want my kids to know that I have a life outside of the one that revolves around them, even if it is a very small and very limited one right now 😅

You know you think outside of the box when you’re bumpin and grindin at an Usher concert one night, then geeking out at a historical nonfiction book tour event the next night. These experiences might not be your cup of tea, but I’m happy to embrace the eclectic space I consistently find myself in.

Both crossed off goals I’ve set for myself. Brian and I are prioritizing dating. This was our first concert together since having kids. I screamed the words so loud I thought I’d surely lose my voice, and Brian sang along too (though in a much more subdued manner). We had a blast.

Then last night, I went back downtown to hear from the #1 NYT bestselling author @sharonsaysso, who I’ve admired for many years. She manages to beautifully articulate the existence of nuance, building bridges, and most importantly, loving our neighbors.

I found Sharon when the world—or at least, my family’s world—was imploding in 2021, when Brian decided to leave his police department. I felt like my voice, energy and stamina was faltering because I was living in a world of black and white but all I could see was grey. Her voice of reason was like music to my ears, and I was proud to join her community even if it meant less leading of my own.

Her words last night filled up my heart and lit a fire reminding me what we can do when we are bold, and brave and willing to have the audacity.

Sometimes not “choosing sides” makes a lot of people unhappy. But I am looking forward to seeing what magic we can do with more thinking outside of the box.

🥹🥹🥹 Never did I ever think I’d be diving in some bushes to catch a snake. Yet here we are. I knew Ty would be excited to see it. But I didn’t realize he’d be even more excited as he let it go. Watching it vanish into the trees was pretty cool.

Oh, and it was my bad on him calling it a smooth green snake. He told me it was a rough green snake but I used my animal scanner app and it told me “smooth green snake” but turned out he was right the first time.

I hope he gets to work with animals some day 🫶🏾

I didn’t know “getting ready parties” were a

I didn’t know “getting ready parties” were a thing until last year, when Jayda went to a friend’s house before the 8th grade dance. So I called dibs on homecoming 6 months ago.

I used to dream of days where I could host my children’s friends over, not just for special occasions, but as a safe hangout space to kick off your shoes and feel at home.

I promised all the moms I’d take a lot of pics because… well you know me. So I ran around like the paparazzi and tried to give each of them their own personal photoshoot. Then uploaded it on a shared folder for the girls and their mamas while they were at the dance.

I know these years are precious and special and it’s an honor to witness. I remember the adults who were kind, and influenced me when I was a teen and I’m trying to remember that with my interactions.

Jayda and her friends looked stunning! She said the dance was just ok. Getting ready was her favorite part.

That face you make when your favorite character is back for another adventure. #ad📖 The Percy Jackson story continues in Wrath of the Triple Goddess. Last year, Jayda and I devoured rickriordan’s The Chalice of the Gods the day it came out but that was much easier when she was in homeschool. Now she’s squeezing in chapters of the book on car rides, before bed, and in between games. I have a little more time than she does right now but feel guilty finishing it before her. In Percy’s continuing quest to earn college recommendation letters from the gods, he has to pet sit the goddess Hecate’s polecat and giant mastiff during Halloween week. What could go wrong 🤣?
