Operation Nursery Makeover Part 5 {$215 Canvas Art Giveaway}

| | |

So… The crib is up, mattress in the bed (still has the wrapper on it though), we have a dresser, I made the mobile, her name is hanging in adorable modge podge letters made my yours truly, and I have some beautiful wall art hanging above her crib with a cute vinyl saying once again created by *clears throat* this mama right here!!

What I'm Making Monday

I got a bed skirt to go under the queen bed that’s in the room, and I’m making some throw pillows that match the crib bedding that’s COMING TODAY! And curtain valances I made for the bed (tutorial for pillows coming soon… If I ever finish them).

I got some wall shelves for a corner of the room and I hung them up Friday, and I am refinishing a toy box I bought for $20 on Craigslist.

It’s safe to say the room is coming together from [wanna be] Man Cave to Nursery, it’s really transforming! I blogged about my husband’s love/hate relationship with my redecorating on my Parenting blog, so check that out too, comment if you can pretty please!

But there’s still some things I’m working on. For one, I’m still trying to figure out what to do with this high ledge in the room. It’s so high and there’s so much white between what’s below on the wall and up on the ledge (I’ve put a few teddy bears up there so far) that I feel like I need more up there.
I’m thinking of adding maybe some baskets, and big blocks or something… But I think I need something more drastic… I may even*gasp* paint the wall above the ledge/shelf as an accent wall. Maybe I’ll paint it green or yellow. We’re renting so I’m hesitant to paint but I really am not sure what else to do, but she said we can paint if we want (though me way have to paint it back). I also worry about getting up there… I’ll need a ladder or something and this could be dangerous in my condition.

Now on to something else I added to the nursery recently… I’m cheating a little on this week’s What I’m Making Monday cause while I MADE it… Sorta, some ordering was also involved.

I had seen posts and tweets about this company called Modern Bird Studios. They have a very–well–modern type of art that’s beautiful for your home.

When they contacted me and asked if I wanted to try it out I was soooo indecisive on what I wanted. I knew I wanted something personal, but something that would still go in the room. I worried their contrast look wouldn’t go with my whimsical theme… Boy was I wrong!

Since I like butterflies I asked if they could take this picture I took of a butterfly during a date with my hubby, and convert it into a piece of art. Originally we tried pink and brown. But once I figured out the colors of the nursery we decided to go with pink, green and white! They were so professional, polite and QUICK! And they sent me examples every step of the way!

They shipped them to me in the best protective shields. Really, there was no way I was gonna get a scratch on those things, it took me about 20 minutes to unwrap it all! But I was SO impressed when I got them out and set them side by side. Look how it turned out!So sturdy, beautiful, unique PLUS I took the photo! I think that adds a nice personal touch, knowing I took that picture and it turned into something so pretty and personal for the room, plus it all matches. But the nice thing is they also have pre-designed series you can see on their site, with beautiful pictures you can choose from with flowers, and other wildlife.

Then, wanting to add my own little flair to it I added these bows and hung them on the wall! It’s an illusion though. There’s a nice stand on the back of the picture so it’s actually hanging by that and a nail, then I added the ribbon and taped the bows to the wall (hehe, sneaky I know). I can’t wait to show you the nursery all together once I get it all finished. We’re getting there!

I went a totally different route with some of my photos, since I was going for bright, colorful, and “nurseryish” but look at these other GORGEOUS styles for your home!

  1. I think those butterfly pictures are amazing. I would really have to think hard if I would use one of my own photos or not. I do love the blosom series they have on their website. I love the daisy 1 prints in almond and cherry and could easily see using that as a starting point for creating a little girl’s nursery!

  2. I love the butterflies too!!! I also love the beach scene with the children and the blue and white color combo. The ones of the children are adorable too! It would be a hard decision to make! Awesome giveaway!

  3. I like the very neutral brown/black. . .although I haven’t started designing my nursery yet (only 9 wks along) so as I get into that I may decide would want something to match that instead! I would use a nature photo as well, probably mountains from back home in Alaska.

  4. I think that is so awesome!!! I love the butterflies! 🙂 I love anything brown and blue, brown and green, and brown and pink. So any one of those three combos I think is perfect!

  5. I love like a blue and brown combo (the colors of our living room) and the pic of our first family photo.

  6. For your ledge, I would put some fake plants, like a long, green, leaf-y ivy. It’d bring some color in and make the room look more alive.

  7. I would do black and grey of an old picture of my hubby and I holding hands in high school. I love how yours turned out!

  8. This would be very hard choices for me. I would like something of hubby and me now that we have an empty nest and grandbabies coming left and right! I think I’d do a baby blue and blk print. If I can’t find just hte right photo, I would use something with a tree and do a fern green aqua color for my sewing room

  9. I would do the java brown and urban beige combo of a picture I have of my husband holding our little girl in front of a rustic barn.

  10. I would use the high ledge to create a garden like atmosphere in the room! I would make it with vines, ivy, and florals to match your decor. Make the swag look hang down and put some butterflies in the flowers to make the top of the room (on the ledge) POP! 🙂

  11. I would love to have the black & white, or maybe the sepia-tonish one!
    I want one sooo bad!

    Thank you for the opprotunity!

  12. I am so in love with MBS! We move on Friday and got all new furniture so I need decor to go along and this would be perfect!

I would want one using Velvet Chocolate and Urban Beige.

  13. I definately WOULD NOT put anything that would collect a lot of dust in her room ie. fake flowers etc. It would be adorable if you put a few of her stuffed animals, dolls, some pictures & frames up there;}Good luck!

  14. I would choose a photo of my kids, and would probably go w/ black and white. i’ve got the perfect spot picked out in my living room…hoping to win!

  15. Like what you did with the artwork from Modern Bird. As for the ledge, you could get the hubby to put a cool wall paper on the back. He could use thumb tacks to hold it up so you don’t have to worry about how to get it down later. Then you could add baskets for storage, some cute little trinkets and maybe even some pictures.

  16. My favorite bloom series pictures are the two with the tan & black theme. But I would love to do my own picture(s) from my travels or everyday experiences. I think using your own pictures makes it that much more special to you. You’re butterflies are BEAUTIFUL! What a beautiful whimsical item for your daughter… that is definitely something that can grow with her!

  17. First of all let me just say how stinking cute those butterflies turned out!!!
I may do something in yellow of our little kitty Leo who died a few years ago. This morning my DH and I were just saying much we missed him, and how he would love the baby.

  18. Amazing art… I checked out their website right away! I want one SOOOOO bad!!! I love the black and whites, I have a 3 month old and would love to get one of his pics done!!!I am now a follower of your blog, modern bird on twitter and both of you on facebook!!!!

  19. I left a comment on the Project Pregnancy Blog!
    Interesting discussion on pre-washing btw

  20. I think you should do something colorful with the ledge – maybe not paint b/c that would suck to repaint, but put up some wallpaper w/out adhesive? Just a quick put up … it looks like it’s high enough no one would notice if it were put up with double-sided tape.
I think books would look cute up there – like ones she won’t read until she’s older 🙂

  21. i had seen your butterfly art in another post and wondered, so thanks for clearing up the mystery. . . if i win, i would do one of me and my baby that my husband took when the babe was 3 months old.

  22. I like the blue and white ones best, but the brown and orange is also pretty awesome. Very creative decorations. I might get a print of some cute monsters, or of hubby and I before baby.

  23. My favorite color combo is yellow creme and warm gray, though I like the idea of natural wood tones as well. And I’d probably get a closeup photo of my husband and I for our bedroom.

  24. My decorating idea for the ledge: That is a great place for an accent wall. It wouldn’t be a lot to paint, and it would draw your eye up there and differentiate it from all the white below. You could also do the baby’s name in large scale wooden letters. You can get some pretty big ones from Hobby Lobby made of unfinished wood, so you can paint or stain them to look however you want. Another idea: Paint the wall and do a vinyl transfer of butterflies in a contrasting color.

  25. i love this! i have a picture of my daughter in our backyard that i would love to have in the cherry/almond color.

    heatheranya at hotmail dot com

  26. Wow the cherry almond color is AMAZING! and i would probably do the photo of my hubby first holding our baby! it is such a precious photo! i love it!

  27. Following! There are a few different color combos I would do depending on the room. I’d probably go with Black and Pewter Gray. I like the Cherry Blossom series too!

I love Modern Bird. I would go with a Tiffany Blue and black portrait of my beloved Minky who passed away. I know exactly the picture I would use too.I really want one!

For the ledge, on my son’s in his room I have blog blocks that I got at Homegoods that spell out DREAM along with teddy bears etc.

And that should be one comment for each entry! Sorry…

  31. I visited Modern Bird’s website and I really like the brown/green and brown/black combos. I would most likely have a picture of my two daughters made into an art piece, since they are my inspiration for everything I do.

This would be a great item to auction off for our non-profit, so a family of a child with a heart defect could have a treasured memory. I’d love to have one to give away or auction off for @tmlhduke!

  32. I suggest letters placed on the high ledge-spelling out something like “Little Love” or a nursery rhyme, prayer, etc. You can get different sizes, shapes,, styles, or keep uniform. I think that would be sweet. I also think little shoes would be just darling, or fake flowers that look like they are planted on the ledge.

  33. I would do a blue/natural color combo probably and a picture of me and my husband for our bedroom. Unless I found the perfect picture of our dogs then I could use it in the nursery. I also love the new bloom predesigned collection.

    mariahm22 at gmail dot com

  34. I love the brown and cream and blue and cream combos. I think I would get a picture we took of the skyline in Japan remastered. 🙂
    kirbycolby at gmail dot com

  35. I think the ledge would look nice decorated with some inspirational quotes. It’ll look nice, add texture, and be easier than painting.
    kirbycolby at gmail dot com

  36. I would for sure use a picture of the Newport Pier which is by my house. So many memories for our family and what a great way to display it in our home!!

  37. I love the black and white one of the the baby in the brim beanie. I would love something similar done with my son but maybe it brown and tan to match his nursery!

  38. I can’t think of a specific picture I would use, but it would have to be a family one. I think I would like to use either black/white or do two shades of brown.

  39. I like the color combo of velvet brown and urban beige. I would probably get a picture of our airedale terrier to put in my boys’ room.

  40. I really like the red and the black with the wood color effects. I would choose a photo of my kids to make my art

  41. I’m a sucker for the black and white! I’d get a photo of our family to hang in our home.

  42. I think the ledge in the nursery is such an awesome way to personalize the room. Some really cool colored vases of different heights and sizes would look great and after baby arrives you could put some large photos there. What about painting just the rim of the ledge a different accent color, too?
    jennifer_atchison(at)hotmail(dot)com

  43. RaNette Free – The ledge in your nursery. I recently discovered this great store called Sarah Jane Studios on Etsy.com. They have a whole collection of adorable prints that you might like!(I am in love with the month-by-month set.)

  44. I like all the black and white ones, but I might also be gutsy and do one in baby blue and java brown!

    romancingthestork (at) gmail (dot) com

  45. I’d use white and black and maybe use a picture of our hike up the mountain on our vacation last summer. O_Leo_5(at)hotmail(dot)com

  46. What about fun jars or vases in various colors and sizes? You could probably get by without spending a lot of money if you kept an eye on the thrift stores and garage sales!

    romancingthestork (at) gmail (dot) com

  47. Those turned out so well! Lovely.
I would choose a picture of my daughter and do it in espresso and white maybe. They have so many great options!
    soluckyducky at (gmail) dot (com)

  48. Black/Mediterranean colours and I’d like to get our pet of 21 yrs done as she just passed days ago and our hearts are more than broke

  49. Can you put children’s hard cover books on the high ledge? I know you don’t like toys, but how a doll display – maybe American Dolls?

Or maybe you can find some large butterflies and make it a decorative display?

  50. I would love a picture of my 3 kids and maybe in a black & white or the most natural color there is besides that

    sibabe64 at ptd dot net

  51. I would put safe things on the shelf so it won’t ever fall on baby if the room for starters. Stuffed toys are good but remember after a while they collect dust. Things that can be easily washed would be good. pillows etc. Sometimes you can even get a unisex train that instead of going around it would go back and forth and maybe it could be stationery so it will never fall. That would be great especially if the babys crib or bed is on the other side of the room so they could view it. Another idea is things that glow from the distance or light up at night
