How to make a tutu dress: Easy tutu dress tutorial

Before Lil’ J was born I already had about six tutus and three tutu dresses made for her. I posted a tutu making tutorial already, but tutu dresses are even more fun, especially for little babies and in my opinion, they’re easier to make! So here’s are my instructions for how to make a tutu dress.

I didn’t want to pay $40+ for something I could make for $5 so I learned how to make them myself.

I was making one for my friend, so I took photographs along the way to show you how it’s done. How to make a tutu dress: Easy tutu dress tutorial

First, what you’ll need is tulle, a crocheted tube top (which can be made of you cut the tie at the end of a big beanie, or you can buy 6in crocheted headbands here), tulle, scissors, and whatever embellishments you want: flowers, ribbon, etc.

1. Cut the tulle in lengths that you like. I buy my tulle by the roll at Hobby Lobby. It’s rolled up 6in wide which is perfect for tutus. Then I cut the strips 20in long since it’ll be folded in half and become a 10in tutu.

2. Fold a tulle strip in half, and push the hoop part through a bottom crochet hole in the tutu top.

3. Pull the other end of the tulle through the loop to make a easy knot, pull it tight.

4. Repeat all the way around the crocheted top.

5. Add the flower, and ribbon embellishments to finish it off. I make the flower detachable on a silver hair clip so it can be a hairbow, or clip onto the dress!I love making things, especially when it doesn't require sewing. Erin says:

Do you use the whole spool of tulle when making the dress? I buy it off of the bolt, but I was wondering if it would be cost effective to buy the spool of tulle.

I compared the cost and the spools were cheaper for me! 🙂

Hopie says:

First off let me just say WOW! You are very talented. This is the first time I have seen this and I Love it. I love to crochet and do crafty things but have never attempted anything like this. I read the information and for some reason I think I am missing something. What type of yarn are you using to crochet the top, it looks almost stretchy, also where can i find the pattern for the top 🙂 Thank you so much and I am extremly excited to make one of these 🙂 Thanks for posting it 🙂

Vicki says:

I have a question. Do you skip a few holes when putting the tulle on the crochet tube top? Like do you do every other hole?

Hopie, I didn’t crochet the top, I bought it as a beanie and cut it opwn. Vickie, yes, sometimes I skip holes, it just depends on how it’s looking. i play it by eye 🙂

Nicole Said….
I was wondering could I use one of the crouched headbands for the top? I have ones that are stretched out and I can’t use for my girls heads anymore? This tutu dress is so cute by the way. Thanks for the tips and pointers.

As a matter of fact you can! I’d just make the tulle a little longer for the skirt. It’ll be empire-waistish 🙂

I was wondering if you knew how to make them with material instead of the crochet top. I love this idea but I want to make one for my daughters birthday in December, but the crochet will be too cold.

Thank you.

Melissa Sue says:

You are SO talented!! This is gorgeous!! Look how pretty the colors are together, and it looks like it fits the little girl perfectly..and I love the little flower you put on the side, it completes the whole dress!!! BEAUTIFUL job!!

Teann says:

I love this! It’s so gorgeous! I am definitely going to try to make this for my little princess. I’m just wondering though…my baby girl is in 12-18 months now and I am wondering if the 10 inch length would be too short. What size was this for originally?

Mommy Jes says:

hi, may i ask where to buy tutu tops like that in your design? Thanks! 🙂 tried to click the link you gave but its no longer available

jetz says:

Hi, I was just wondering if you put your tulle strips through every hole all the way around or if you skip holes or just put pieces here or there. Thank you

Almost every hole, if I skip I do it and try not to make it so noticeable by fluffing it out. Goodness, you asked this a long time ago. Sorry for the late reply!

I know you asked this years ago I’m sorry… I skip some holes 🙂

Thank you for this simple and straightfoward tutorial. The result was so cute! I’m sharing it in mu blog. Check it out! É feito dom amor!

Misty says:

Jennifer Pugh says:

That is so cute! I will try to make it for my cousin’s daughter. She is one month old but she is so tiny. Do you have anything for bigger girl like 3 yrs old that can wear it as a dress? My 3 and 7 yrs old love to wear tutu! 🙂

Karissa Myers says:

I love tutus on little girls!! I have made some for my girls before, but couldn’t figure out how to get a crochet top big enough for a 7, 3, and 2 year old without it having tons of holes showing. Any advice? If so email me (: BTW, have you seen the super hero inspired tutu dresses? ADORABLE! You do a fantastic job at making them for your precious baby (:

Nikki Gibson says:

I went out this morning and bought a couple of headbands, satin ribbon and some fabric (think we must have a tulle shortage as I had to go to three different places to track some down and even then they hardly had any left!) and whipped up not one but two of these lovely little dresses for my three year old and 17 month old in the space of an hour. The girls were delighted when they got home and saw their new “fairy princess” dresses and I thoroughly enjoyed myself too. I already have two requests from friends to make their daughters similar ones! Thank you for such an easy to use tutorial 🙂 xxxx

Hey! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could get a captcha plugin for my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having difficulty finding one? Thanks a lot!

Stacie says:

May I ask where you buy your tulle from online?

Jennifer says:

Yes, I usually get it on Amazon or Ebay 🙂

ShannOn says:

How many yards of tulle do you need to make this?

Emeline says:
