The best shows on TV (if you ask me)

DVR is a blessing and a curse. But mostly a blessing. I remember when I couldn’t wait to watch a show with my family the same time every week. Particularly Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That’s the family show that sticks out the most to me. We’d have dinner and/or popcorn ready to see what Angel and Buffy were gonna get into this week.

In my adulthood I’ve never found myself glued to the television screen at the same time once a week. I prefer to wait til the shows aired, the kids are in bed, and I have a tub of ice cream in hand to enjoy.

I didn’t think of myself as much of a TV watcher but since maternity leave, I’ve picked up a new habit (and Netflix). While nursing (or editing photographs) I’d turn the TV on for more background noise than anything else… But eight seasons of Desperate Housewives, nine seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, and two seasons of Scandal later, I had a new fondness for my flatscreen.

I’ve been more excited than I should admit about this fall because my favorite shows are all coming back on. Let’s just say Thursday’s rock, and my DVR gobbles up all of my shows. As my good friend once said “I feel a crazy sense of accomplishment. Like ‘Yes! I finished and deleted three shows tonight. I was really productive today!'”

Unfortunately the Bachelor won’t be back on until January, but Once Upon a Time just started back up, as well as it’s new spin off Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (I really hope it gets better). Greys Anatomy is on for it’s 10th season (I can’t believe it’s still going and if you ask me, it shouldn’t be). And then there’s my personal favorite… Scandal.

scandal memeIn case you’re looking for a good new show to watch, or just care about my current addictions, I’ll break down my current favorites for you in the order they come on during the week…

Sundays

once-upon-a-time

1. Once Upon a Time: One of my favorite shows on TV. This is totally a family show I’d watch with my family if anyone was into it other than me. My kids are too young and my husband doesn’t care for it. But every time I visit my mom and siblings we watch it together. It’s a modern-day fairytale show with a twist. I love love love this show. I’m especially fond of the first season. The second season was OK and I’m hoping this third season will be the best yet. And did you hear Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas are engaged? So excited for them!

When possible I like to watch this as it’s airing cause the cast members tweet #OnceUponATime, and a few of them have even responded to me (yes, I’m a HUGE dork!)

Mondays (in January)

2. The Bachlor/ette: Good mind-numbing TV. Mostly on for background noise purposes and to constantly laugh/shake my head at the fakeness of it all. I also can’t help but read Reality Steve to make my viewing pleasure even more pleasurable. This is the only “reality” show I watch.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays- Nothing. Whomp Whomp.

Thursdays

once-upon-a-time-in-wonderland-posters-revealed-kiss__oPt3. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: a Spinoff from Once Upon a Time based in… You guessed it… Wonderland. Only one episode has aired so far. It seemed a little slow but it looks like it has great potential, so I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.

4. Grey’s Anatomy: I flew through this show on Netflix but wasn’t full committed until about five seasons in. I heard Sandra Oh–My favorite character on this show is calling it quits after this season, so I’

I’m really hoping the show is also ending this season. I can’t picture it without her and really… A 10-season series is freaking long.

scadal thursday nights5. Scandal: Like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal is also by powerhouse producer Shonda Rhimes. I picked up this show after so many of my readers urged me to on Facebook and it’s by far my favorite show on TV right now. It’s fast moving and definitely not a show for background noise. The first two or so episodes had be scratching my head but by the third episode I was hooked. There’s a lot going on, and it moves fast, so fast in fact, I’m thinking of re-watching the second season to catch parts I missed in my haste to finish before my 1-week free trial of Hulu plus was up.

Fridays

shark_tank_logo16. Shark Tank: This is the one show on this list that I watch with my husband (oh, and I lied, it’s reality too). I’ve been hooked ever since my friend, Deidrea, owner of Hot Mama Gowns was on it. Business owners pitch their ideas and/or businesses to successful entrepreneurs for the hopes of getting an investment. It’s fun watching them get ripped apart, or praised, and guessing which ones will do well. It’s one of my favorite shows because we always watch it together.

A couple few honorable mentions:

Blue Bloods: My husband likes the show more than me but I like it cause it’s a show we can agree on.

Southland: Used to be a favorite but wasn’t renewed… Wahh!

Friday Night Lights: We’re slowly but surely making our way through this show on Netflix. We’re only on season two.

Walking Dead: I watched two season then gave up because the zombies scared me too much.

Daniel Tiger: The least-annoying kid show my daughter likes. And it takes me back to my childhood days with characters from Mr. Rogers.

What shows do you like to watch? Does your spouse watch them with you?

You gotta check out Revenge too. I found it on Netflix a few months ago. It comes on on Sunday’s too though

Martha says:

I love this post! And I agree with you! As a child I remember Thursday being my favorite day of the week because that was the night my family would watch the COSBY SHOW together!
Now I LOVE watching shows after they air so that I can fast forward through the commercials and feel like I have saved myself time!
Here’s my list:
Sunday:

REVENGE – If you like SCANDAL I highly recommend Revenge! Watch it from the beginning (I think they are on season 3 currently) and you will get hooked! My husband and I watch this together and my mother and I talk about it the day after since we live on different coasts.

(TRUE BLOOD is not on right now, but I am addicted to it and that one I have to watch alone, my husband refuses).

We’re watching BOARDWALK EMPIRE again this season but mostly because my husband will be starring in one episode later this month.

THE NEWSROOM just ended and I can’t wait for it to start again. This is quality TV!

BLACKLIST – This new show has my husband and I hooked (even though I have never been a fan of Dave Spader). This show will leave you on the edge of your seat!
HOSTAGES – I LOVE Toni Collette and Dylan McDermott is such great eye candy! This show will have you biting your nails in anticipation.

I must say I do like SURVIVOR but I usually catch up on it when I have time and it’s not as urgent that I watch every episode.

Another show I love is CASTLE. I catch the reruns from past seasons on TNT and the present season On Demand.

And I am with you on Thursdays – GREYS ANATOMY and SCANDAL (by far the best show on TV).

As soon as I can I want to watch all episodes of LUTHER!

I can’t wait for NURSE JACKIE to start again! I’m also looking forward to these shows starting back:
HOUSE OF LIES
GIRLS
CALIFORNICATION

If you ‘re looking for shows that have ended and you can watch from the beginning on netflix etc I highly recommend
THE BIG C
WEEDS
BIG LOVE

We just finished the second series of Once Upon A Time in the UK this summer. I hadn’t heard of the spin-off, I expect that will be on here next year. I was actually the other way round, I preferred the second series to the first. 🙂 I knew Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas were dating but hadn’t heard that they’re engaged. That’s cool. 🙂

We’ve currently on season 6 of True Blood in the UK. And I hope we get the latest Vampire Diaries here soon.

Sleepy Hollow just started here last week. It seems interesting but I’ve only seen one episode so far!

Sarah says:

The Good Wife is my absolute favorite show. I haven’t watched it yet this season b/c I am waiting until I visit my family next week so my mom and I can watch it together. I rewatched the first four seasons in preparation for this one. OBSESSED.

Grey’s Anatomy used to be a fav, but it has gone downhill, and fast. It is almost painful to watch now, but after nine seasons I feel committed to seeing how it ends. I’m hoping this is the last one… I am not sure I can hang on much longer.

I should check out Once Upon a Time. It looks right up my alley!

(Also, I laughed out loud at the “feeling productive” comment. Love it so much!)

I need to check out the Good Wife. I have a feeling I’d like it solely based on the title.

I also want to know how Grey’s ends, but ya, I agree, it’s pretty painful now.

Quiana says:

So cute that you included Daniel Tiger LOL! I’m a sucker for nostalgia. I’m into Game of Thrones and Walking Dead. Love em!

Brianna says:

Aw no! You have to keep watching the walking dead! I agree, the zombies are super freaky scary; BUT the story gets SO good. The zombies get more gross, but appear less it seems after awhile. Great post though!!

I’ve been asking my friends to give me the low-down cause I am very curious what’s happening and if there’s any hope for an end/cure.

Tricia P. says:

You have to watch The Blacklist on Mondays. I am hooked too, I love it. It is the smartest show on tv. I love the new Once Upon a Time and Revenge, oh and Sleepy Hollow is great too. I don’t like zombies, but more power to those that watch it, and we love our Duck Dynasty, good family values and they always end the show with a prayer!

Elana Kahn says:

You need to watch Merlin on Netflix. 5 seasons of pure awesomeness.

I agree with you about Grey’s I checked out around season 5 when most of the original characters bounced.

Kennie says:

I love Once Upon A Time! And Scandal? That show gives me life every Thursday! Boardwalk Empire is a favorite of mine too. I’ve got nothing for Tuesday either, but for Wednesday you HAVE to check out American Horror Story on the FX network. This is the third season, but each season it’s a whole new show, so you don’t have to go back and binge watch – you’ll be starting anew. The premier was last week, so at this point you’re only one show behind.

Breanna says:

The Good Wife, The Good Wife, The Good Wife!!!!!!!!!! Such a smart, mature show. I love it. And Revenge is a good one too, even though I think some of the acting is a bit corny. But it’s still a story you get sucked into. And my husband and I cannot wait for The Americans to come back (…and now that I think of it, I hope it is coming back!) We like to check in with The Voice and Biggest Loser every once in awhile but as much as I’d like for these two to continue, I don’t look forward to them anymore and rarely watch a full episode.

Our DVR is our highly anticipated nightly entertainment too! We watch so many things I don’t even want to take up space in your comments listing them 🙂

Kira says:

I liked desperate housewives, army wives, raising hope, and parenthood. Parenthood is probably the best acted, cast, and well written TV show I’ve ever seen. Very realistic-but some people may not like it because it reminds them too much of their own homes. Reading, sleeping, and watching TV all all states of comotose and relaxation so I can see why some may not like it. I strongly advise giving it a shot though!!!
