If you’re thinking of taking your kids to see Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and looking for a spoiler-free parent review, don’t worry, I gotchu. And details (without spoilers) to help you decide if Shazam 2 is scary for kids in your home. 

Full disclosure: I loved the first Shazam movie. I think it’s my favorite in all of the DC superhero franchises. I guess except maybe the Dark Knight movies– But even still, those are well done but dark and Shazam is more my type of movie. Funny, light, exciting, and something you can take the whole family to enjoy. Shazam: Fury of the Gods is very similar in that way, however we didn’t bring our 4-year-old to see it. My 9-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter did, however, enjoy it.  

That said, parents should know that Shazam 2 might be scary for some kids, particularly young kids, or those who might be afraid of monsters or eyes with no whites–More on that in a bit.

Parents should know in Shazam 2, there is a bit of swearing and implied swearing. Including several uses of “sh*t” “d*mn” other insults and an implied f-bomb. One of the characters develops a crush. There’s a reference to being hungover though it’s not overtly stated but joked about around a younger sibling. Two characters briefly kiss. [POTENTIAL SPOILER: One character looks at magazine photos of a man with his shirt unbuttoned and later comes out as gay, his family accepts him.]

I love that Shazam 2, like the first one, featured a foster family full of kids from all ages, and diverse backgrounds. All of our favorites returned for this movie and the parents (whom I love) even have a slightly bigger part in this movie which I adore. In the first movie Billy struggled to find out what happened with his mother and he had to come to terms with his abandonment, in this movie Billy continues to deal with his emotions surrounding that and how that relates to his attachment with his foster family. As a parent there were definitely moments where I teared up watching the mother-son relationship.
