With Halloween just around the corner, you may be wondering what fun to get up to with your little monsters. 

A family movie night is a great way to finish off a day of spooky celebrations. To help you choose the perfect family Halloween movie, I’ve compiled a list of Halloween favorites. From little scares to big scares, there’s something here for the whole family! You know your kids best, so use your discretion with deciding what to watch with your people. But this list should help give you ideas in case you’re plotting a Halloween movie marathon.

Family Halloween Movies for All Ages

1) It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)

Based on the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, this is one of the most enjoyable animated movies of all time, and chances are, you grew up watching it! Filled with innocent humor and loveable characters, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, is the perfect choice for your Halloween family movie night!

2) Casper (1995)

4) Hocus Pocus (1993)

Do I really need to introduce this one? After Max lights a cursed candle, three witches, the Sanderson sisters, resurrect, seeking revenge. Filled with humor and great music, it’s no wonder this movie is often the first choice for many on Halloween night!

5) The Haunted Mansion (2003)

6) Monster House (2006)

7) Hotel Transylvania

When a human named Johnny enters a hotel for monsters, Count Dracula does everything he can to stop his daughter Mavis from falling in love. Featuring great characters, incredible animations, and a humorous plot, this movie has something for everyone in the family.

1) The Addams Family

A heartwarmingly hilarious movie about a very unusual family as they wait for a missing family member to return. Filled with charming characters, this movie does a great job of highlighting the importance of family and staying true to yourself.

4) Labyrinth (1986)

5) The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Let’s not get into the great debate of whether this is a Halloween movie or a holiday movie. Let’s just agree it’s a great family Halloween movie! When Jack Skellington, a resident of spooky Halloween Town, stumbles upon the magic of Christmas Town he becomes obsessed resulting in the abduction of the beloved Santa Claus. This movie is filled with humor, life lessons, and catchy songs that kids (and adults) will love.

6) The Witches (1990 or 2020)

Either the The 1990 or the the 2020 reboot are a scary but not-too-scary pick for a Halloween movie night.

9) Corpse Bride

Another great animation movie by Tim Burton tells the story of groom-to-be Victor after he accidentally gets married to a corpse named Emily and is swept into the land of the dead. Captivating and super creative, you’ll want to watch it over and over again!

The plot follows Norman, a resident of a town dealing with a deadly curse, who has the ability to talk to ghosts. Along with a few companions, he sets out on a quest to save the town. This movie is engaging and has the perfect balance between creepiness and comedy – a great choice for the little ones!

For Bigger Scares

1) Beetlejuice (1988)

After Adam and Barbara die, they set out to scare away the family who have just moved into their old house. When their efforts prove unsuccessful, they seek the help of the eccentric and a little scary, Beetlejuice. This movie is crazy, fun, and in a league of its own. It’s sure to be one you’ll want to watch again!

2) Arachnophobia (1990)

3) Ghostbusters (1984 or 2016)

After three scientists lose their jobs, they start an organization called Ghostbusters to eliminate the evil ghosts creating terror in New York City. This movie is goofy, fun and features one of the most iconic soundtracks of all time. Both versions are brilliant in their own right, so whatever your choice, it’s sure to be a hit!

7) Edward Scissorhands (1990)

When Edward, a manufactured man with scissors for hands (hence the name), is taken in by a sweet lady named Peg, things seem to be going great, but they soon take a turn for the worst when Edward is blamed for a crime he didn’t commit! This film is another of Tim Burton’s unrivaled masterpieces and is full of romance, humor, and emotion (so make sure to have the tissues ready).
